+I just wanted a machine to mess around with, test things, break things. Build and deconstruct — that’s how you learn. Basically, a computer for quiet evenings.
+Why not go for a refurbished one? I’d never tried that before, so I started browsing around.
+I quickly settled on Lenovo’s ThinkPad line: quality machines, easy to upgrade — RAM, drives, even the battery or screen.
+I didn’t need much power; I mostly wanted to test different tiling window managers at first.
+Even for RAM, 8 GB would be plenty.
+
+## The Purchase
+
+Then I found a gem: a ThinkPad T480, i5-8250U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, a 14-inch 1920×1080 screen, and an Ethernet port — no Wi-Fi compatibility headaches to deal with or custom ISOs to build.
+And the price? Only €230.
+I hesitated… but not for long. Actually, I cracked pretty fast and ordered the beast.
+It was October 12.
+
+## The Beginning
+
+Two days later, the package arrived.
+No fancy packaging — just a box, the laptop, and a charger.
+I plugged it in, then spent way too much time trying to boot the NixOS ISO (don’t forget to disable Secure Boot and the other fun stuff).
+I installed NixOS in LUKS mode via the live USB, from the terminal instead of Calamares.
+After the base install (without X), I did a bunch of tweaks and finally launched X with bspwm in the early afternoon.
+
+That’s when something felt off — especially when I opened Firefox.
+A quick hwinfo --monitor later, and… the screen was running at 1366×768.
+What an idiot — I’d forgotten to double-check that detail in the specs before buying.
+
+## Doubts and Confusion
+
+Still, I went back to BackMarket’s site to look at the product page — it clearly said 1920×1080.
+So what now? Send it back or keep it?
+I checked around and found that a 1080p panel costs about €60.
+So I wrote them a nice message, attached a screenshot of hwinfo --monitor, and offered two options:
+either refund me the price of the panel so I could replace it myself, or take the machine back.
+
+They replied with a ridiculous compensation offer: €23.
+My guess? That’s probably their entire margin on a €230 sale.
+They also offered a return, with two possible outcomes:
+– the refurbisher has a proper model in stock and ships it;
+– or they don’t, and I get a full refund, plus a 5% discount on a replacement order (half their margin?).
+
+Except… I then got another message telling me to return the item immediately.
+So, was option 1 canceled? I didn’t quite get it.
+
+I decided to sleep on it, but when I powered on the ThinkPad the next morning, the screen looked truly awful.
+I had to head to work, so I planned to drop it off the next day — October 14.
+The locker refused the barcode (lots of beep-beep-beep, zero results), so I took it to the post office instead.
+
+## The Long Wait
+
+The refurbisher received the parcel on October 17.
+They warned me it might take several days to process.
+Four days later, they offered a replacement — same model, but with 16 GB RAM instead of 8.
+I replied that if the screen was truly 1080p, I’d take it.
+BackMarket confirmed they’d forward my response… then silence.
+
+Three more days passed.
+It had been a full week since the refurbisher got the laptop, and I still knew nothing.
+
+## Knock, Knock
+
+Around 1:30 PM on October 24, someone knocked on my door — a very pleasant delivery woman asking for a code.
+I told her I wasn’t expecting anything and hadn’t received a code.
+She said a signature would do. And there it was: the ThinkPad.
+I booted it right up and dove into the BIOS to check the specs.
+Everything matched — especially the 1080p display — and as a bonus, 16 GB of RAM.
+And honestly, the screen difference was night and day!
+
+## The Outcome
+
+I still reported the delivery, since no one on their side seemed to know it had shipped.
+My first refurbished purchase left me with mixed feelings.
+Would I do it again?
+Honestly… I’m not sure.

+Je voulais juste une machine pour bidouiller, tester, casser. Construire, déconstruire, c'est comme ça qu'on apprend. Bref une machine de soirée tranquille. Pourquoi pas du reconditionné ? J'ai jamais testé et je commence à regarder ce qu'il y a de disponible. Je me fixe rapidement sur la gamme ThinkPad de chez Lenovo ; machines de qualité, on peut upgrader la ram, les disques, changer la batterie voire l'écran facilement. J'ai pas besoin de beaucoup de puissance, pensant surtout y tester différents tiling WM pour commencer. Même pour la ram, 8Go seront largement suffisant.

+## La commande 
+
+Je tombe alors sur la perle : Un thinkpad T480, i5 8250, 8Gb ram, 256GB SSD, un écran 14' en 1920x1080 et un port réseau, au moins pas d'emmerdes sur la compatibilité wifi pour commencer nécessitant de personnaliser une iso. Et un prix somme tout contenu : 230€. J'hésites, mais en fait pas si longtemps que ça. Bon, en fait, je craques assez vite, et je commandes le bestiaux.  Nous sommes le 12 octobre.

+## Les débuts
+
+2 jours plus tard, je reçois la bête. Pas de chichi dans l'emballage : un carton, le portable et un chargeur. Je branche le tout, et perd surtout pas mal de temps pour réussir à booter sur l'iso NixOs, ne pas oublier de désactiver Secureboot et autres joyeusetés. Bref, j'installe nixos en mode luks, donc via le live USB, mais dans le terminal et non en utilisant Calarames. Je reboot apres l'installation basique sans X, j'effectue pas mal de réglage, et me lance enfin dans X avec bspwm en début d'après midi. Et la, surtout au lancement de Firefox, un truc me semble louche. Un coup de `hwinfo --monitor` plus tard, et je vois que l'écran est en 1366x768.... Quel con, j'ai oublié de vérifier ce point dans la fiche technique avant de l'acheter.

+## Doutes et cafouillages
+
+Je part quand même vérifier sur le site de BackMarket la fiche produit du portable ; pour la résolution de l'écran je vois bien 1920x1080. Que faire ? Je le renvoie, je le garde ? Je commence à regarder sur certains sites, et une dalle en 1080p coute environ 60€. Je prend donc ma plus belle plume, prépare la copie d'écran de la sortie `hwinfo  --monitor` et leur propose de me dédomager du cout de la dalle FHD dont je prend le remplacement moi même, ou alors me reprendre l'appareil. Ils me proposent une dédommagement clairement ridicule : 23€ ; à mon avis, pour une vente à 230€, ça doit etre leur marge. Ou alors de le faire reprendre par le reconditionneur et la restent 2 solutions :
+- Le reconditionneur a le bon produit en stock et me l'expédie ;
+- Il ne l'a pas et il me rembourse intégralement, et backmarket me donne un taux de réduction de 5% sur une commande de remplacement (soit la moitié de leur marge ?).

+Sauf que .... dans la foulée, je reçois un autre message me donnant les indications pour retourner l'article. Du coup, l'option 1 est annulée ? je comprend pas trop. je me dis que je vais prendre une nuit de réflexion, et en rallumant le ThinkPad le lendemain matin, l'écran est vraiment horrible. Je part au boulot, pas le temps de m'en occupé, il partira au bureau de Poste le plus proche le jour suivant, soit le 14 octobre, le Locker ayant refusé de me prendre le colis. A part faire des bip bip bip au scan du code barre, il n'a pas fait grand chose d'autre.

+## Longue attente
+
+Le reconditionneur reçois le colis le jour suivant, soit le 17 octobre. On m'annonce qu'il peut prendre plusieurs jours avant de traiter mon cas. 4 jours plus tard on me propose un produit équivalent au premier appareil, mais en 16Gb Ram au lieu de 8Gb. je leur répond que si l'écran est bien un 1080p, je souhaites une livraison. Nous sommes le 21 octobre, Backmarket me confirme faire suivre ma réponse au reconditionneur, et plus rien. 3 jours de plus passent, cela fait une semaine que le reconditionneur a reçu l'appareil, et je ne sais toujours rien.

+## Toc Toc
+
+Jusqu'a 13h30 le 24/10 ou j'entend quelqu'un frapper à la porte. Une charmante livreuse qui me demande si j'ai bien reçu un code à lui transmettre. Je lui répond que je ne l'attendait pas et que si c'est ce que je crois, je n'était pas au courant que le colis était parti en livraison. Donc ben sur pas de code ; finalement, une signature suffira. C'est bien le ThinkPad. Je l'allume et je files illico dans le BIOS pour checker l'intégralité de la configuration. Tout y est, surtout l'écran en 1080p et un petit bonus de 8Gb ram en plus. Et honnetement, la différence est flagrante niveau écran !!!

+## Dénouement
+
+Je préviens quand même que j'ai bien reçu l'appareil malgré l'absence d'information de leur côté. Première commande en reconditionné qui me laisse un gout un peu amer. Est ce que je repartirai vers ça pour un prochain usage ? Honnetement, je ne sais pas.
